resistance is a teacher

Let me be the first to warn you, the resistance in writing will be real. You will hit road blocks. You will be confronted by feelings and stories that rise up like resurrected ghosts. You will want to run away, hide, shut the whole project done. Please for the love of all that’s writing, don’t give in to that voice of resistance.

Here is how we do the dance of resistance:

Choose to see resistance as a teacher, not an enemy

Consider resistance as a sort of spiritual growth

Let resistance show you what you avoid and fear

Show up to the page in this midst of resistance and learn resilience.

When we begin to see resistance as a teacher there is a powerful invitation to dive into our truth. Consider this: You have been called for this moment. Your words are waiting for you.

No matter what your big writing goals are, remember the ultimate power of writing is the healing journey it takes you on in uncovering your voice and truth. When the writing gets tough, and it will, come back to this reason WHY. This WHY is the most powerful force against resistance that I know of because it wears down its defenses.

Here is a powerful excerpt from Stephen Pressfield’s book, War of Art. By the way, if you pick up any book on resistance, let this be the one you choose..

“Are you a born writer? Were you put on earth to be a painter, a scientist, an apostle of peace? In the end the question can only be answered by action.

Do it or don't do it.

It may help to think of it this way. If you were meant to cure cancer or write a symphony or crack cold fusion and you don't do it, you not only hurt yourself, even destroy yourself,. You hurt your children. You hurt me. You hurt the planet.

You shame the angels who watch over you and you spite the Almighty, who created you and only you with your unique gifts, for the sole purpose of nudging the human race one millimeter farther along its path back to God.

Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It's a gift to the world and every being in it. Don't cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you've got.”

So friend, are you feeling resistance? Then let this be a reminder that you are onto creating something that is important, not only for your soul, but for the worlds. Keep on keeping on.
